Joshua is now 15 1/2 weeks old. By this stage things are much, much easier than they were in the first six weeks. For one, he’s only waking up 2 to 3 times during the night for a feed. Basically every 2 to 3 hours.
This morning he woke up at 2:30am. I fed him. Then I checked his nappy. It was wet, so I changed it. Then I put him back to bed, up near the headboard between Simon and me. At this point he usually goes straight back to sleep. But this morning he just wouldn’t settle. He was wriggling around and making lots of noise. So eventually, (about 40 minutes later), I decided to pick up and carry him around the apartment. At least that would give Simon a chance to get some sleep.
When that wasn’t helping I made some weak chamomile tea from dried camomile flowers and gave him a couple of sips of it. Camomile’s a great relaxant. Then I sat down on the couch and chanted guru pooja (a seven minute sanskrit chant) while holding him in my arms. He started to settle. So I lowered him gently into my lap. He relaxed completely. I covered him with a blanket. It was 4am by this time. I then meditated for half an hour. When I opened my eyes he was still sound asleep. So we went back to bed. Victory!
Then at 6:30am Joshi woke up again. I thought he was waking for his usual feed, but he wasn’t hungry. After offering him booby breakfast he still wasn’t settled, so I lay him face down on my chest. He fell asleep straightaway. And we both slept for a few more hours. Yay!
At 8am when we woke up, I checked his nappy, only to find a great big poo. Now it’s got me wondering … was he unsettled because he’d done a poo in his nappy just after I’d put a clean one on him? And instead of checking his nappy again his sleep-deprived mum was feeding him chamomile tea and chanting! Oh dear. Mammahood – you can’t always get it right!
